VR this week on Reddit and X: Quest 2 runs out of new features, the Steam Frame browser learns WebXR, and Titanfall 2 takes over

Quest 2 and Quest Pro get a date for their last big update

The news post of the week on r/OculusQuest and the top post on r/QuestPro carried the same notice from Meta to developers: both headsets reach the end of feature development. Horizon OS 2.13 starts rolling out in January and reaches every headset by March 2027, and it is the last system release for both (UploadVR). Security patches and critical fixes continue through the end of 2027. Existing apps keep working, the store keeps selling, cross-play with Quest 3 stays where a game supports it, and developers can still ship updates. New features and APIs go to Quest 3, Quest 3S and later only, and December 2027 is the last month a new app can launch with Quest 2 support (Road to VR). On r/QuestPro the mood was practical. Owners asked how to keep a headset on its current firmware and whether a factory reset forces the update.

Our take Nothing you own on a Quest 2 stops working next year, so there is no reason to panic-buy. What changes is the pace. New browser and system features will land on the Quest 3 family first, and Quest 2 versions of adult games will drift behind over 2027. If you are on a Quest 2, our games-by-headset guide shows what already runs on it today.

Steam Frame owners learn to carry a power bank

A meme about the Steam Frame's battery became one of the busiest threads on r/virtualreality this week, and the replies were more useful than the joke. Players report a little over two hours when streaming PC VR and noticeably less when games run on the headset itself. Swapping means changing the whole strap, and the USB-C port at the back gets in the way when you lie down to watch a film. The thread mostly settled on the same fix. A 20,000 mAh power bank that charges at 30 to 45 W, kept in a pocket, and several owners said that turned the battery into a non-issue. A smaller argument started over streaming from Valve's Steam Machine, which one owner said keeps freezing even on a wired connection. Others put it down to young software rather than hardware.

Our take A light headset with a pocket battery is a fair trade, and the Quest crowd has been doing the same with strap batteries for years. For long adult VR sessions the cable is the bigger question than the battery. The Frame still has no row in our Will it run? table, because nobody has sent us a report yet.

Live sports in VR, and a Meta team member in the comments

A post on r/Quest3 called immersive sports a potential killer app after the poster watched a college football game in 180-degree video from the stands. Someone who said they work on the project at Meta answered in the thread. ESPN games are US only for now, more sports follow, and the Sports tab of the TV app lists what is coming. They added that a choice of fixed camera angles should arrive with Meta VR Glasses in spring 2027, when Meta says it will show more than 100 live events a year with ESPN, MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC. Replies asked for hockey, concerts, a stadium-only audio feed and calendar reminders. One owner said the Quest 3 is too heavy for more than a quarter of an hour and is saving for the lighter glasses.

Our take Live 180-degree video is the format adult VR studios built their business on years ago, so it is funny to see sport call it new. The weight complaint is the real story. Whatever Meta ships next will be judged by how long people can keep it on.

Titanfall 2 VR multiplayer is the thread every sub keeps reposting

Since the open multiplayer beta of the free Titanfall 2 VR mod went live, the top lists of three subs filled with near-identical posts calling it the best VR shooter of the year. A long thread on r/OculusQuest from a player who has used VR since the first Rift set the tone, and the comments were full of setup questions about Quest 3, Steam Machine and Mac. One reader asked whether there was any news on the EA ban we covered on Sunday. Nobody had any, and no second ban turned up in the threads we read. Players also noted that the base game's price went back up after a deep sale.

Our take One unexplained ban and dozens of happy players is still the picture, which is good news. Our advice from Sunday's issue stands. Check any ban mail on EA's own site, not through a link.

The Steam Frame browser can now open WebXR pages

Valve's hardware account and several VR reporters spread the same patch note on Wednesday. SteamOS 0.5.7 beta for the Steam Frame enables WebXR in Chromium 157 and later, so web pages can now switch into VR on the headset itself. The beta also updates SteamVR to 2.19.1, adds microphone controls for echo cancellation and noise suppression, fixes a battery readout on the controllers and removes Advanced Supersampling on the Frame (GamingOnLinux). To get it you opt in to the beta channel under Settings, System. Two days earlier, posts about the SteamVR 2.19.1 beta pointed to sharper text and cleaner colour when streaming.

Our take This is the most relevant headset news of the week for our corner of VR. A lot of adult VR games run in the browser, and until now the Frame could only reach them through a PC. We have not seen a report from a Frame owner yet, so treat it as beta. The WebXR fix for Quest 3 covers the usual VR-button and controller problems, and most of it should carry over.

The Frame climbs fast in Valve's own survey

A widely shared post pointed to October's Steam Hardware Survey, where the Steam Frame jumped to 5.49% of VR headsets on Steam, up 4.94 points in a month and already ahead of the Pico 4. Quest 3 still leads at 27.27%, Quest 2 fell 3.57 points to 22.23%, and the Quest 3S holds at about 11%. VR headsets as a whole rose to 1.75% of Steam users.

Our take One month is not a trend. Still, Quest 2 losing ground the same week Meta set its last update is a neat coincidence. For us the Quest 3 family is still the main audience on PC VR, with Quest 2 a big second.

Searches for adult VR studios and games turned up only fan art this week, so there is no story here.
