Quick answers

Is Holodexxx: The Club included in VRPorn Premium?
Yes. Premium members download the latest build from the game page.
Does it work on Quest 2 or Quest 3?
Quest is not on the studio's headset list. The usual route for PC VR games is Link from a Windows PC; we have not confirmed it ourselves.
It crashes or says "Failed to open descriptor file". What do I do?
A player who saw the error had mismatched file names; another suggested the zip had not extracted fully. Re-extract the full archive before anything else.
How long is it?
The studio puts an average session at about half an hour.

Our read, before we play it

Some of the most lifelike bodies in adult VR, inside an experience that is short, confusing to start and fragile at launch.

Worth it if

  • You care about how real a virtual human looks above everything else
  • You have a PC VR setup or a Quest on Link
  • You want a half-hour showpiece, not a long game

Skip it if

  • You want a standalone Quest game: Quest support is not listed
  • You dislike troubleshooting a launch crash
  • You expect a choice of performers in every scene: a player found only one available for positions

A decade of scanning people

Holodexxx is one of the oldest names in adult VR. In January 2016 UploadVR visited a young studio that flew performers in, stood them inside a rig of 112 DSLR cameras, stitched the photos into a model and brought it to life with motion capture. Its founders came from games and visual effects, and the goal was digital humans, not joystick games. Five years later Steam turned the studio down three times, the first time for a version without nudity, under its rule against video pornography and sexually explicit images of real people. That is why you find Holodexxx on itch.io and VRPorn.com rather than in the big stores.

The Club is where that work has landed. It moves the studio to Unreal Engine 5 and centres on a scanned Mia Malkova, with a Riley Reid model also listed.

What you are paying for

On itch.io it sells from $7.99, pay what you want, as a 3.1 GB download; five ratings there average 4.2 out of 5. Premium includes the latest build. The studio describes an average session of about half an hour, which is a fair way to think about it: a showpiece rather than something to return to every night.

The minimum PC is modest for UE5: a GTX 970, a recent Intel i5 and 16 GB of memory on Windows 10. Headsets on the list are the Rift, Vive, Pimax and Windows MR, plus a 2D mode. Quest is missing. A player asked whether it works on a Quest 2 and got no reply, so treat Link from a PC as untested.

Where it stumbles

Comments on VRPorn.com read like a bug tracker. One player reports a crash at startup, another a launch error, "Failed to open descriptor file", where the file names in the message did not match; a site regular suspected an incomplete unzip. Others could not work out where to look to start the show, asked why the third episode was locked, or found that only Mia could be chosen for positions even with Riley selected. Holodexxx keeps a public bug board on Trello, linked from its itch.io page, which is the better place to report these than a comment section. For the launch errors specifically, our Holodexxx crash fix takes them one by one.

Our read

If you want to see how far photogrammetry has taken adult VR, The Club is the clearest demonstration on Premium after Braindance, and unlike Braindance it lets you choose positions rather than only watch. Go in with a PC VR headset, extract the archive in full, and expect a short, polished-looking visit with rough edges in the menus. On a Quest 3, you will be streaming from the PC; which route to use depends on your router and cable.

What reviewers and players report

  • In 2016 Holodexxx was flying performers to a rig of 112 DSLR cameras, stitching the photos into models and animating them with motion capture.

    — UploadVR, on the studio's origins, Jan 2016

  • Steam rejected three Holodexxx submissions, calling the work video pornography, even after a nudity-free first version.

    — NME, on Steam, May 2021

  • Reports of a crash at startup, a launch error about a missing descriptor file, confusion about where to look to start the show, and only Mia available for positions even with Riley selected.
